Living in a parish with a school allows me to visit the children anytime. However, we had to put fences up years ago to protect them from harm and hired a retired County Sheriff’s Department security guard.
Waiting until a child gets hurt is foolish; I couldn’t sleep knowing I neglected precautions. Jesus warns us immediately about wrong thinking and behavior. We should invite Him into our homes, like at dinner with the Pharisees. Imagine Him at your table—what does He see in our hearts?
He called the Pharisee a “fool” to shock him so he would quit playing games with his relationship with Jesus. It’s the same as someone would call me a fool when people kept falling on our sidewalks, and I never fixed them.
We often wash the outside of the cup—what others see—while ignoring the inside—what Jesus sees and we don’t. So why do we keep hurting ourselves and others? Because we haven’t truly met Jesus where we need His mercy most.
The Gospel Challenge:
Why not invite Jesus to dinner? What does He see that you don’t? Jesus offers a remedy: “But as to what is within, give alms, and behold, everything will be clean for you.” Giving our time, talent, and treasure for someone’s good changes our focus from us to others. What a sacrifice—and a joy! Feel how clean and clear your mind becomes when life isn’t about you.
Next time you worship Jesus at the Eucharist, ask Him who needs help; someone will come to mind.
