Do you remember those coloring books with dots you had to connect to make the picture? I used to trace those dots following the numbers and then see the image.
I thought of those books when I read today’s gospel. Imagine what the picture would look like if I didn’t know numbers and just connected any dots as I liked.
Jesus tells us in today’s gospel that he knows how we can connect the dots in our lives. Take a moment to imagine the dots on the coloring book as different aspects of your life.
Some of the dots are about our relationship with God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Some of the dots are about our connection with the Church and all its relationships and activities.
Some of the dots represent family members and various friendships. Finally, some are about our work and our choices in recreation.
Jesus teaches us in the gospel today that He knows how to connect all the dots in our lives so we can live eternally, even in this world. Think of the Law and the Church’s teachings as the lines Jesus connects in our lives.
The last thing Jesus said before He ascended into heaven was, “Behold, I am with you always until the end of the world”(Matthew 28:20.) “Always” are the lines between each dot in our lives Jesus connects with us as we live moment by moment in his Presence. The smallest letter of the Law is the tiniest aspect of our life He wants to bear with us, providing us comfort and security.
Gospel Challenge:
Embrace the joy of spending a few precious moments with Jesus each morning. Let the challenges of His commandments and Church teaching challenge you to give Him the pencil and watch what happens. You will live life in all its fullness.
