Martha’s situation is one we can all relate to. Imagine preparing for a visit from Jesus. You can understand her feelings, can’t you?
I should check each room carefully. Is the bathroom nice and clean? What about the mirror—does it sparkle? I need to fluff up the pillows on the couch and fold that cozy blanket. How did I forget to dust? God is coming to bless my home, and I’m excited to get everything ready. After all, it’s a special day because God’s blessing is on its way.
It doesn’t take much to understand Martha and her stress. She is fussing over everything that needs to be done. After Jesus arrives, her sister is sitting in the living room, hogging His attention and getting all of it. You can read Martha’s thoughts: ‘I am going to give her a piece of my mind, and maybe Jesus too.’ “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Tell her to help me.”
It may seem impolite, but we can find comfort in the fact that Martha took her concerns to Jesus and spoke openly with Him about her troubles. She didn’t let it fester. It’s the kind of thing you’d feel comfortable sharing with a friend.
Jesus explains why she’s stressed. “Martha, are you in the kitchen rushing around because you care about yourself or me? Who are you trying to impress? Come sit with Mary and me for a few minutes.”
Spending a few quiet moments with Jesus restores order. Be faithful to the First Commandment in everything you do. Love the Lord with all your heart and strength every time you chop vegetables and wash dishes. Our work is no longer a burden but a joy when we aim to do it for the Lord.
Gospel Challenge: Those peaceful moments spent sitting with Him and Mary at the start of your day truly make a meaningful difference. They’re the perfect way to warmly welcome Jesus into your day. Rest assured, He will stay with us throughout the entire day, even when our minds are elsewhere. Remember, it’s all about our sincere intention.
He is with us even when we’re fluffing the pillows.
