Some years ago, I had my shoulder replaced. I remember waking up after the surgery, and a nurse smiled at me and said, “Press this little button when you feel any pain, but don’t wait until it gets too severe.” I realized that a little dab will do you. So, I pressed that little button, and the morphine felt so good.
Of course, the doctor prescribed pain medication for me when I got home. That tiny pill is so small, and I laughed, thinking, “What in the world does that little thing do with this amount of pain? It is so small!”
Of course, I laughed at myself because that little pill did the trick. I knew then, and still do now, not to judge something by its size. And that’s what Jesus is telling us in today’s gospel. One tiny mustard seed and a small pinch of yeast in a measure of flour can do something remarkable beyond what we can imagine. Our faith is like that mustard seed.
The power of faith comes from the Lord Jesus, in whom we trust. He reminds us that the size of our faith doesn’t matter. It can be as small as a mustard seed. However, it is the One in whom we trust that truly matters.
Gospel Challenge:
Try a pinch of unconditional love in your flour and watch the Lord Jesus go to work.
