In Mary’s meeting with her cousin Elizabeth, we see how our words can stir the grace of God working in the one we greet. Like Mary, disciples are bearers of God’s word, and He is the one who fills another with the Holy Spirit.
They didn’t first sit down, have a cup of tea, explain all God had done for them, and go, “Oh. How wonderful. That’s great. Wait till I tell you what happened to me.”
No, it wasn’t like that. It happened the moment they greeted each other before they shared anything. Can you imagine poor Elizabeth, John jumping up and down for joy in her? The source of such excitement wasn’t theirs. God couldn’t hold back his joy that two people believed he could do the impossible for them.
That’s why Mary ran in haste to Elizabeth. That’s why John kicked so hard at Mary’s greeting. Two people accepted God at his word, and miracles happened. Mary conceived a child when she had no relations with a man. Elizabeth conceived a child in her old age. It is all because they said yes, “Let it be done to me as you say.”
When we say yes to God and don’t have to have everything worked out to our fancy, God’s joy can burst inside us, too.
Gospel Challenge
We know what God is asking us to do, and it keeps coming back to us. Say yes to Him and let him work out all the details. His joy in your trust will spark another, like a greeting, even in the simplest things.
