Anyone who has worked out in a gym or at home knows the benefit of staying with it. However, it takes a lot of perseverance, primarily if we work out on our own. There will be those days when we want to give up and not bother. However, I know from experience that working with a buddy is a great motivator.
Surgery creates a different problem for exercise. Knowing when to start to regain shape after surgery can be a struggle. And once you do, it can take a couple of weeks to get back on track.
We can experience the same difficulty in our walk with the Lord Jesus. Sometimes we get off track and lose our enthusiasm to practice our faith. That’s when we need a buddy to help us not throw in the towel. Like exercising our body, it’s easy to find excuses not to attend Mass and confess our sins consistently. Our human nature takes over, and we forget the good God gives us when we receive His Son’s mercy and Precious Body and Blood.
Like any good coach, Jesus motivates us with a stern warning, “To anyone who has, more will be given, and he will grow rich; from anyone who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”
Let’s pray we never lose the precious Catholic faith we have been given. But, if we have not been regularly faithful to His sacraments, let’s find a human coach who will motivate us weekly to be strong in our Lord Jesus.
