We Know It All
Will anything be different when we leave Mass and go back home? Will we have changed in any way, having encountered Jesus in Word and Sacrament? Everybody in today’s gospel has a different opinion of Jesus’ identity. Some thought he was a prophet. Some thought he was the Christ of the Messiah.
But others thought they were smarter and knew the Messiah would not come from Galilee. Instead, he would be from David’s town of Bethlehem. And then,
St. John puts in that little detail that each person went to their own house. So what did they take with them back to their home?
Did Jesus have any impact on them, or did they return home the same? The soldiers certainly had a change of heart about Jesus. They were off to arrest him and didn’t. What would be different for them when they returned home?
So when we returned home, having listened to Jesus this whole Lent, we received him in the Most Holy Communion. Will anything be different for us?
Gospel Challenge:
What would happen if we returned home with a more profound commitment and love for Jesus that expresses compassion for people, especially people I find challenging?
Please, God, our encounter with Jesus this Lenten season will profoundly affect our love for people in our home.
